SCRUM arrives at Unkasoft!

This summer is been frantic! We're rearranging our dev team (one of them has already arrived and the other going to do it soon), released two games more (we can't say anything yet but you'll get news soon) and testing one new methodology for out project management: SCRUM.

It's a long time since we're using eXtreme Programming as development methodology, especially in our Battlewizard team, but planning, managent and tracking matters have been untidier than development side. So with Juan Palacio's help we're working out with SCRUM and now we're completing our sixth sprint (:

SCRUM is a auto-management team methodology, that is: there isn't a manager who cries commands and the others obey, but the team should be auto-managed.

Well, that's right and auto-management looks great but it's quite difficult to apply. Don't try to use this methodology at any company, because I know some of companies and people who will turn it in a true failure.
Just two days ago, Joel Spolsky has published a set of articles about team management, and he tells us there're three typical categories of management inside companies:
So first advice: do not try to apply SCRUM at any place. First obtain a good working environment and then everything will be easier.

Really impressed about your comments on SCRUM. We are also using it since January. I liked the way you explain it.

We still have problems with planning, or, to be more precise, with what isn't planned. We are quite accurate with tasks, but we almost always end up having to do unplanned ones.

As far as I remember our best one was July's, when we were focusing almost all our efforts in planned tasks.

After some months, I'm a bit afraid about whether we are using it in the right way. I mean, during the firsts sprints (about 30 days long), everybody asked for tasks to do, but in the last ones, after months of people getting specialized on certain tasks, some activities introduced on our defect control almost have "names" on them.

Do you have any "certified scrum master"?

Do you think there is enough people interested in SCRUM in Spain so we can ask Schwaber to arrange some training here? I contacted him long ago and he is open if we can propose something.

I'm really interested in meeting you guys to talk about development...

We have problems with planning too, above all, with time estimations... It's too bad Scrum doesn't solve these well known problems with estimated vs. real effort (:

We're really careful with tasks introduced in the middle of the sprint. They should be dropped into product backlog instead of sprint backlog! This is the only way I know to focus development in one line.
Anyway, critical tasks could be arranged in a "one week sprint", as Scrum II suggests (take a look here, it's worth reading).

We don't have any certified master... This is almost impossible here at Spain (: Most similar person I know is Juan Palacio, who is helping us to implement Scrum.

It would be great if we could call for Sutherland or Schwaber to give us one of their sessions (perhaps here at Valladolid?). Some months ago one training at Madrid was cancelled through lack of people.
I'm sure you can gather enought people from CPII. Isn't it?

Hi again,

I didn't even know that a Scrum training was tried to be organized in Madrid. That makes me think that, either I'm totally uninformed :-P or it wasn't very well advertised...

I will try to arrange something. Let's see.
